A number of people have contacted Socialist Youth after reading our exposure of the scandalous “Steps To Work” courses. For individuals unemployed for six months or more it is mandatory to participate in these courses – if you fail to enrol your benefits are ceased.

The recent announcement that the Lough Erne Luxury Hotel and Golf-course was being put into administration represents the latest blow to the Fermanagh economy. It follows a similar move at the Quinn Group that is likely to herald large-scale redundancies as new owners seek to “restructure” their holdings to maximise profits.

TheSocialist spoke to William, a disabled low paid worker and single parent in East Belfast who relies on benefits which are now coming under attack.

“I’ve been receiving a small amount of disability benefits for a number of years following a serious breakdown caused by stress and overwork. Although I’ve managed to get back into some work, its only part time and at a very low wage. I get about £2,400 a year in benefits on top of my wages of £9,700, so life is a struggle.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has warned that there is a "risk of a crisis legacy of a lost generation". In the UK young people continue to be the hardest hit by the recession. This week's Budget is a declaration of war against working class and poor people. The Tory/Lib Dem government is attempting to spin the Budget as being progressive. Nothing could be further from the truth. This Budget will lead to major cuts to public services, wage cuts, job losses, attacks on benefits and further tax cuts for the super-rich.

Nationalise the Quinn Group

Few people can imagine what €4,000million looks like, but that is just what Sean Quinn lost through gambling on the casino they call the stockmarket. As a result of this grotesque speculation and lust for profits, thousands of honest workers directly employed by the Quinn Group are to lose their jobs, not to mention the thousands of other workers whose jobs are dependent on the Quinn Group.

Sean Quinn lost this sum speculating that the depressed price of Anglo-Irish Bank shares would recover. However, he did not gamble by buying shares but by buying ‘Contracts for Difference’ (CFDs) amounting to 25% of the bank’s shares. Such a highly leveraged strategy can yield massive returns but if things go wrong the losses can be just as great.

Workers need bailed out, not the bankers – Nationalise the Quinn Group

The Socialist Party has reacted to today’s announcement of job losses in the Quinn Group by calling for “workers to immediately organise independently of the Quinn millionaires to fight to save much needed jobs.”
