Fight the Cuts!

This week's Budget is a declaration of war against working class and poor people. The Tory/Lib Dem government is attempting to spin the Budget as being progressive. Nothing could be further from the truth. This Budget will lead to major cuts to public services, wage cuts, job losses, attacks on benefits and further tax cuts for the super-rich.

Nationalise the Quinn Group

Few people can imagine what €4,000million looks like, but that is just what Sean Quinn lost through gambling on the casino they call the stockmarket. As a result of this grotesque speculation and lust for profits, thousands of honest workers directly employed by the Quinn Group are to lose their jobs, not to mention the thousands of other workers whose jobs are dependent on the Quinn Group.

Sean Quinn lost this sum speculating that the depressed price of Anglo-Irish Bank shares would recover. However, he did not gamble by buying shares but by buying ‘Contracts for Difference’ (CFDs) amounting to 25% of the bank’s shares. Such a highly leveraged strategy can yield massive returns but if things go wrong the losses can be just as great.

The Socialist Party has reacted to today’s announcement of job losses in the Quinn Group by calling for “workers to immediately organise independently of the Quinn millionaires to fight to save much needed jobs.”

The Socialist Party demands that the Assembly Executive takes action to save jobs at Tyrone Crystal by taking the workplace into public ownership.

The decision of company bosses to close Tyrone Crystal will lead to not just the thirty one jobs at the factory but many more jobs losses in the area. The last thing Dungannon and Tyrone needs is more job losses.

Abolish “Steps to Work” – modern day slave labour

Youth Fight for Jobs is demanding the immediate abolition of Steps to Work, the scheme introduced by the Assembly which forces the unemployed to work for free. Steps to Work can be compared to modern-day slave labour. If people refuse to participate, they face getting their dole cut off – not much of a choice there! Employers don’t have to pay a single penny in wages to those who are put to work.

Steps To Work
An introduction to enslavement for the unemployed this “training” scheme includes practices such as creating a chair made from blown up balloons and telling your fellow victims something about yourself which is embarrassing. This type of humiliation and patronising of the working class is deemed “preparation for the world of work”.
