Fight the cuts! Unions must call major demo
Written by Gary Mulcahy, Socialist Party Belfast Tuesday, 27 July 2010 07:30
A massive 20,000 public sector jobs in Northern Ireland face the axe as a result of the cuts contained in the Tory/Lib Dem “emergency” Budget announced in May, according to economists.
The impact of these cuts will be devastating for the North, given the dependence of the economy on the public sector. The public sector accounts for 60% of the economy. Hundreds of thousands of private sector jobs rely on the public sector via contracts and the spending power of public sector workers.

Unison general secretary election - Prentis vote falls despite Con-Dem attacks
Written by A Unison member Tuesday, 06 July 2010 23:02
As reported in last week's Socialist, Unison general secretary Dave Prentis was re-elected to his position in the recent ballot, but with fewer votes than when he last stood in 2005.
The drop in votes for Dave Prentis was in the region of 21%, disproportionate to the fall in the turn-out in the election, from 16% to 14.6%, and is despite the fact that the election took place after the general election, when the threat of the Con-Dem attacks on public sector workers might have been expected to rally Unison members behind the union and its leadership.
Thousands of jobcentre workers threatened with dole
Written by theSocialist (England & Wales) Tuesday, 06 July 2010 13:29
Jobcentre workers are reeling this week. Having been told how valuable they have been in getting the country out of recession, this week they were told that 4,000 of them are to be sacked within the next few months. This is even though unemployment has started to rise again and, with over 2.5 million unemployed, the recovery is still a long way off.
The previous Chancellor, Alistair Darling was forced to acknowledge in his budget in March that jobcentre workers had helped to reduce the budget deficit by a whopping additional £4 billion by getting people back into work quicker than anticipated. Since then the new Con-Dem government has announced these savage job cuts aiming to save £30 million.

CWU ballots BT workers for strike over pay
Written by Clive Walder, CWU Birmingham, Black Country and Worcester Branch, personal capacity Friday, 11 June 2010 15:29
The CWU is set to ballot its members in BT for industrial action over pay for the first time since 1987.
Last year the union recommended its members accepted only a £400 non consolidated payment and reductions in pension benefits because the company pleaded poverty after making its first loss since the 1970s.
