Thousands of jobcentre workers threatened with dole
Written by theSocialist (England & Wales) Tuesday, 06 July 2010 13:29
Jobcentre workers are reeling this week. Having been told how valuable they have been in getting the country out of recession, this week they were told that 4,000 of them are to be sacked within the next few months. This is even though unemployment has started to rise again and, with over 2.5 million unemployed, the recovery is still a long way off.
The previous Chancellor, Alistair Darling was forced to acknowledge in his budget in March that jobcentre workers had helped to reduce the budget deficit by a whopping additional £4 billion by getting people back into work quicker than anticipated. Since then the new Con-Dem government has announced these savage job cuts aiming to save £30 million.

The I CAN Centre in Ballynahinch has again been threatened with closure and thrust into another period of uncertainty by the South Eastern Education and Library Board in this first round of savage cuts across education.
CWU ballots BT workers for strike over pay
Written by Clive Walder, CWU Birmingham, Black Country and Worcester Branch, personal capacity Friday, 11 June 2010 15:29
The CWU is set to ballot its members in BT for industrial action over pay for the first time since 1987.
Last year the union recommended its members accepted only a £400 non consolidated payment and reductions in pension benefits because the company pleaded poverty after making its first loss since the 1970s.
South Yorkshire firefighters forced to strike again
Written by Alistair Tice, Yorkshire, Socialist Party England & Wales Thursday, 10 June 2010 10:48
South Yorkshire Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has called a strike for 24/25 January and another from 27 January to 4 February. This is against bullying management's threat once again to sack firefighters if they don't agree to detrimental and imposed shift changes.
Fire chiefs, backed by the Labour-controlled Fire Authority, have been trying to force through 12 hour shifts for 18 months.
Fight BT’s National Pay Deal
Written by CWU member Wednesday, 09 June 2010 08:30
BT has offered workers a 2% pay rise with two one-off payments of £250 – one of which will be at the managers discretion. This pathetic offer is nothing in comparison to BT’s profits which were up 11% in the third quarter of 2009. BT rejected the CWU’s claim of 5% despite the fact that this would only equate to just 1.1% of the companies £5.7 billion projected annual profit. Meanwhile, BT’s profits look set to go up. The recent volcanic ash cloud and its lingering problems for air travel will mean a surge in conference calling – a definite unexpected increase in BT’s profits.
Civil service 2009 pay final offer
Written by Paul Dale, Vice-Chair CS Executive Committee (personal capacity) Thursday, 03 June 2010 13:59
Following the rejection of an initial offer for 2009 Northern Ireland civil service pay in April, NIPSA has now received an improved final offer. The union has embarked on a 3-week consultation with their civil service branches with members attending pay meetings and voting whether to accept or reject the offer. The Civil Service Executive Committee which has a Broad Left majority has reluctantly recommended the offer to members. However we do not describe this as a good offer or even a fair one and falls far short of our 2009 claim.
Mistaken occupation of British Airways talks
Written by Socialist Party England & Wales Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:35
The defeat of Willie Walsh and the brutish British Airways (BA) management is the most important aspect to this dispute.
It is therefore unfortunate that the reported decision of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) members at the end of the Right to Work Conference to invade talks between British Airways management and Unite has partially obscured this issue.
